Waterfowl and Migratory Bird Hunting


REMINDER:  Waterfowl stamps (both state and federal) are not required for hunters under age 16. Waterfowl hunters under age 16 need a Small Game License, HIP certification, and Early Goose/ Regular Goose permit.  Waterfowl hunters age 16 and up need those items plus the State and Federal Waterfowl Stamps.  ​SELECT HERE for a license selection table that will illustrate this.

  What Licenses are needed to hunt Ducks?

  Small Game license, HIP certification, and both the State and Federal Waterfowl stamps (Stamps are only required for hunters 16 years old and up).  Select the Migratory License Guide link to the left for more.

  What Licenses are needed to hunt the Early Goose Season?

  Early Season Goose requires the Early Goose permit plus the Small Game license, HIP certification, and both State and Federal Waterfowl stamps (Stamps are only required for hunters 16 years old and up).  Select the Migratory License Guide link to the left for more.

  What Licenses are needed to hunt the Regular Goose Season?

  Where do I find the Federal Waterfowl stamp in Go Wild?

  The Federal Waterfowl Stamp is offerred as an add-on to the Small Game license, or as a seperate product in the product list under the Hunt/Trap tab.  It can also be purchased by itself through the Quick Sale option on the Sales Home page.

  Who needs to purchase state and federal waterfowl stamps?

  Only hunters age 16 or older.  First time hunter ed graduates are exempt from the State Waterfowl stamp during the year they graduated hunter safety.  Federal Waterfowl stamp must be purchased by all hunters age 16 and older regardless.

  What is HIP certification?

  HIP stands for Harvest Information Program. This approval is needed for hunters who wish to hunt any migratory birds.  It is offerred as an add-on with the small game license.  More information on the HIP Survey link to the left.

​​  Anything special with the youth waterfowl hunt?

​  The small game license is waived for youth age 15 and under during this 2-day hunt.  HIP survey is still required (State and federal waterfowl stamps are not needed for hunters under the age of 16).  Exterior goose permit is also needed if they plan to hunt geese.  Note:  Youth hunters do need the small game license during the rest of the waterfowl seasons.
